The Light Across the Ocean

I painted this from a family photograph taken in Cape Town. It tells the story of my brother and his daughter from his first marriage. She now lives in Australia while my brother still lives in South Africa with his wife and their 2 children. But once a year she will come and visit my brother and they will all go away for a seaside vacation. Here they always take a moment to go and stand on the rocks and look out over the ocean. My brother has told her, ever since she was just 5 years old, that even though she lives on another continent she only has to look out across the ocean and know that he is looking right back at her. So the moments when they can actually look out together at the "light across the ocean" are very deeply treasured.
